Happily Blogging
The Blog Dogs is a site used by a group of year 3 students in Epping Heights,Australia. It has a well designed home page and a format that is easy to navigate. The School rules and rules for blogging are easily identified as are the contents of the site. I like the way they have a homework space where students can comment as well as upload their homework. I think this can be good motivation to get students to complete homework.

Huzzah is a site developed by a year 6/7 class in Canada. Again it has a well designed home page and is easy to navigate. I like the way they record live traffic feeds and use cluster maps to see when and where visitors to their site are coming from. Their site seems very accessible to students from around the world and meets their aim of using technology to communicate with others. It is also a fairly’ live’ site so that contributors to the site get quick feedback.

copyright issues
Can I copy material from the internet for research? Yes as long as the material downloaded is deemed 'fair.'
You also need to check the website for any specific information related to copyright and it would be considered unreasonable to to distribute this information to others, for example through email.
What constitutes research and fair use?Fair is essentially not copying more than 10 % of pages or 1 chapter of a book, article or text. When material is used for reseach or study there are some exemptions, these include:- "the purpose and character of the dealing, the nature of the work, the possibility of obtaining the work within a reasonable time at an ordinary comercial price, the effect of the dealing on the potential market for,or value of the work and and the proportion of the part copied in relation to the whole work."(Australian Copyright Council,2011)
Can students use music in videos they make.? Yes generally if copying is regarded as fair and has regard to five factors that comprise special conditions as outlined above.

3 ideas from the readings
I liked the idea of instant messaging with a buddy that was referred to in the Barrone Article. It was shown an as alternative way of doing 'think pair share' with a reading activity. This activity enabled peer learning/sharing and collaboration. I also liked the idea of having a clock whereby students were linked to a different buddy at various times of the day . Often in a classroom students are paired up with the same students all the time, as partners are picked on the basis of friendships. This system allowed for greater collaboration acrosss the classroom.
One concern however would be an overeliance on technology such as IM for communicating within a classroom as it takes away from students developing their oral communication skills.
The idea of differentiated learning on the KidsBiz reading and writing program was interesting. The idea of having articles for students to read according to their level was a good way of dealing with this issue in the classroom. The whole way the classroom was set up also allowed for differntiation and for students who finished tasks early to go onto new activites and use their time productively rather than waiting around for the other students to finish and the teacher to assign new tasks.
The idea of a class blog where students could post their work is a great idea. On 'prac' our students had to create a Diary of a Convict. One of the biggest problems was getting students to edit their own work. I think if they new their work was available for all to see, they would be more motivated to 'polish' their work. It would also allow for easy review and feedback from their peers.

Hi ! here is my definition of New Literacies
Hi ! here is my definition of New Literacies
Knobel and Lankshear (2006) suggest that new literacies are a product of the ‘technical stuff’ available through the use of electronic apparatuses and an accompanying ‘mindset’ that goes with the new and different ways that people can interact, create, produce and distribute items afforded to them by new and developing technology.
This new ‘mindset’ is in tension with a more traditional view of the world that sees and approaches technology as an enabler to do familiar things in more sophisticated ways. Both mindsets coexist simultaneously but with divergent views on the basis of knowledge production.

Wordle is a site where you can create “word clouds” from text that you upload to the program. The clouds will make words that appear frequently, throughout the text, more prominent. The clouds can be enhanced by using/changing the fonts, layouts and colour. Good for teachers to use during literature lessons.
