copyright issues

Can I copy material from the internet for research? Yes as long as the material downloaded is deemed 'fair.'
You also need to check the website for any specific information related to copyright and it would be considered unreasonable to to distribute this information to others, for example through email.

When material is used for reseach or study there are some exemptions, these include:- "the purpose and character of the dealing, the nature of the work, the possibility  of obtaining the work within a reasonable time at an ordinary comercial price, the effect of the dealing on the potential market for,or value of the work and  and the proportion of the part copied in relation to the whole work."(Australian Copyright Council,2011)
Can students use music in videos they make.? Yes generally if copying is regarded as fair and has regard to five factors that comprise special conditions as outlined above.
